Friends who have purchased good condition refurbished phones from other retailers seem to have received phones with significantly better battery health and in better condition. To figure out how to do it right, I went on a shopping spree. They didn't however make it clear that excellent condition does not include battery health, so the technical performance may be ok, but battery health might not be. Back Market ensure all phones they sell have at least 80% capacity. It seems to lose charge fast even when it's not being used.

There are a fair few screen scratches, which may seem reasonable for a refurbished phone but Back Market does state that those phones in excellent condition "will have no scratches." The bigger issue is that the battery health is 85%, and after a full charge the phone is averaging 5 hours with occasional/ light use.
